CYSTIC FIBROSIS FUNDRAISER
SHOWCASES LOCAL ARTISTS
BROOKLYN – New Yorkers tired of filling their weekends with debauchery and vice can add philanthropy to their list of Saturday night activities.
Saturday, April 26, The Five Eyes Festival for Cystic Fibrosis will showcase local artists and musicians at a concert at The Steampoint, 32B South 1st St Williamsburg, Brooklyn as a fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s 2008 Great Strides Charity Walk. The festival will feature several bands, including Brooklyn’s own Sigmund Droid, Boy Crisis, Gunfight! and Bonnie Baxter. Beer provided by Brooklyn's local brewery Sixpoint Craft Ales. All proceeds from the show, including the $10 cost of admission, directly support the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation (CFF). Doors will open at 7:00 p.m.
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a life-threatening genetic disease affecting about 30,000 people in the United States, 60 percent of whom are younger than 18 years-old, according to the CFF . People with CF possess a defective gene that generates abnormally thick mucus that clogs bodily organs, particularly the lungs and pancreas. The mucus traps bacteria that lead to infections and lung damage. According to the CFF, the average life expectancy of CF patients is 36.5 years as of 2005, a 4.5 year increase since 2001, but there is still no cure.
The intention of the Five Eyes Festival is to increase awareness of CF and raise funds for the CFF’s Great Strides Charity Walk. Great Strides is the CFF’s largest annual fundraiser and will take place locally on May 3 in Marine Park, Brooklyn. Representatives from the CFF will be at the Five Eyes Festival to distribute additional information and register participants as individual walkers or as members of the Little Olivieri Urban Achievers walk team.
